Celebrate the rich history and vibrant community spirit of Independence at the 2024 Hop & Heritage Festival, an annual event that honors the town’s legacy as the historic Hop Capital of the World.

This year’s festival, set for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21, promises to be bigger and better, with a packed schedule of events that bring together the best of local culture, food, and entertainment.

Dating back to the 1880s, Independence has a storied history rooted in hop farming. The original Hop Festival, or Hop Fiesta, began in the early 1930s, growing from the lively celebrations in the migrant camps at the hop fields. Although these traditions faded after World War II, the spirit of community and celebration remained strong.

In 2001, Mayor John McArdle reignited this cherished tradition by launching the Independence Hop & Heritage Festival. Despite the challenges of that year, the festival blossomed into a beloved event.

After overcoming recent challenges, the festival returned in 2023 with renewed energy, filling C Street with vendors, entertainment and a sense of community pride. Building on last year’s success, the 2024 festival is set to offer even more, with an expanded beer garden, a wide range of vendors, and live entertainment on the main stage.

Event highlights:

  • Gratitude BBQ (Sept. 20, 6-8 p.m.): Kick off the festival with a community BBQ to thank the volunteers and celebrate the spirit of Independence. The Heritage Museum will also host a special board for attendees to share memories and recognize those who have made a difference in the community.

  • Hophead Hundred Bike Race (Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to noon): Ride through the scenic backcountry roads and hop farms of Independence in this annual fundraiser for the Oregon MTB League. With views of the coast and Cascades mountain ranges, the race is a highlight for cycling enthusiasts.

  • Live Entertainment (Sept. 21, noon to 8 p.m.): Enjoy a full day of live music on the Main Stage and Heritage Stage, featuring local talent and tribute bands. From classic rock to 90s hits, there’s something for everyone.

  • Vendor Marketplace (Sept. 21, noon to 7 p.m.): Explore more than 70 vendors offering food, art, and handcrafted goods. Don’t miss the Young Entrepreneurs Plaza, where aspiring young business owners showcase their creations.

  • Historic and Modern Farm Equipment Exhibit (Sept. 21, noon to 8 p.m.): Discover the evolution of agriculture with a display of vintage and modern farming equipment, highlighting the innovations that have shaped the industry.

The 2024 Hop & Heritage Festival is set to be a celebration to remember, honoring Independence’s past while embracing its future. Join us for a fun-filled day with community spirit, cultural heritage, and plenty of fun.
