Izzy Arthur struck out eight batters in four innings to power Perrydale past Vernonia, 17-7, in the softball opener for both teams.

Arthur allowed three earned runs, but “helped herself with a triple, double and four RBIs,” coach Chris Gubrud stated.

Sophia Jackson did a fair amount of damage herself, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and six RBIs. Jackson and Arthur combined to drive in 10 of their team’s runs.

Brooklyn Barcroft added two hits and scored three times for Perrydale.

Barcroft “also played stellar defense for us,” Gubrud added.

The Pirates head for Vernonia on Tuesday to complete the 3-game series with a doubleheader. The first game begins at 3 p.m.

Last week’s game was also the league opener for Perrydale (1-0, 1-0 overall).
